What to Do If You Think You Have a Cavity

If you think you have a cavity, it's important to act quickly. Cavities do not go away on their own. The sooner you take care of the problem, the easier it may be to treat. A small cavity can often be fixed with a simple filling, but a bigger one can lead to pain, infection, or more serious dental work.

Signs You May Have A Cavity

Some cavities do not cause pain at first. Others may show clear warning signs. You might have a cavity if you notice:

  • Tooth pain or a dull ache
  • Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods
  • Pain when biting or chewing
  • Visible holes or dark spots on a tooth
  • Bad breath that does not go away

If you have one or more of these signs, it is a good idea to make a dental appointment.

Do Not Wait Too Long

It can be tempting to ignore a small tooth problem, especially if the pain comes and goes. But cavities usually get worse over time. The longer you wait, the more damage can happen to the tooth. What starts as a small spot can turn into a deep cavity that reaches the nerve of the tooth.

Seeing a dentist early can save you time, money, and discomfort.

What You Can Do At Home

While you wait to see the dentist, there are a few things you can do to help protect your tooth:

  • Brush gently with fluoride toothpaste twice a day
  • Floss carefully to remove food between your teeth
  • Avoid very sugary foods and drinks
  • Try not to chew on the side that hurts
  • Use over-the-counter pain relief only as directed

These steps may help with discomfort, but they will not cure the cavity. Only a dentist can treat it fully.

What The Dentist May Do

When you visit the dentist, they will check the tooth and may take an X-ray. If the cavity is small, the dentist may clean out the decay and place a filling. If the cavity is larger, you may need a crown or another treatment. In severe cases, a root canal or tooth removal may be needed.

The treatment depends on how far the cavity has spread.

How To Prevent More Cavities

After your cavity is treated, good daily habits can help keep more from forming. Try to:

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss once a day
  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks
  • Drink water often, especially after meals
  • Visit your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings

Good oral care can make a big difference in keeping your teeth healthy.

Call The Dentist Right Away

Some tooth problems need fast care. Call your dentist as soon as possible if you have:

  • Strong or constant tooth pain
  • Swelling in your face or gums
  • A fever along with tooth pain
  • Difficulty chewing or opening your mouth

These may be signs of a serious infection that should not be ignored.

If you think you have a cavity, the best thing to do is make a dental appointment soon. Early treatment can protect your tooth and help you avoid bigger problems later.
