Digital Imaging in Midland Park
Our office is fully equipped with the most advanced digital dental radiographs (X-rays) with the lowest dose of radiation available. They provide us with the ability to better detect, diagnose, treat and monitor oral conditions and diseases for our patients.
Dental X-rays are taken inside (intraoral) or outside (extraoral) of the mouth.
Intraoral X-Rays
- Bitewings get their name from the wing-shaped device that holds the monitor in place while the X-rays are taken. These are taken to check whether decay is between teeth.
- Periapical X-rays highlight one-two teeth at a time and show the entire length of the tooth, from crown to root.
- Full Mouth Series of X-rays (FMX) includes every tooth from crown to root.
- Occlusal X-rays highlight each tooth development and placement in children. These X-rays show the full arch of upper teeth in the upper or lower jaw.
- For cavity detection we use the Dexis CariVu to identify cracks and lesions within each tooth.
Extraoral X-Rays
These types of X-rays provide us with images and information on the jaw and skull. They examine facial bones, impacted teeth, keep track of growth and development and examine the relationship between teeth and jaws.
- Panoramic X-rays rotate around the patient’s head and captures the entire mouth, including teeth, upper and lower jaws, surrounding structures and tissues in one image.
- CBCT generates crystal-clear high definition images of a person’s teeth, soft tissues, nerve pathways and bone. We use the Sirona Cone Beam for our CBCT 3D images.
Dexis CariVu
Zero Radiation Cavity Detection
Dexis CariVu is a cavity detection device that uses trans-illumination technology to see through teeth and identify lesions and cracks. Simply, CariVu is a zero radiation cavity detector where images are read like normal dental X-rays.
It is easier to now explain to a patient why certain treatments are necessary, as the CariVu shows them what they need to see.
CariVu makes cracks in teeth appear like “shattered” glass and it is excellent at detecting dental decay around fillings. It does not yield any false positives if plaque or calculus is present on the tooth.
Is it Safe?
Absolutely! Since there is zero radiation emitted, it is perfectly safe for children, pregnant women and patients who are X-ray averse.

Sirona Cone Beam (CBCT)
3-D Imaging
CBCT is dentistry’s most accurate imaging technology. It provides the team at Midland Park Family Dentistry the ability to more accurately diagnose dental issues providing more confident solutions for our patients.
So What Exactly is CBCT?
Simply, our Cone Beam is a computer controlled 3-dimensional scanning system operating in an “open-environment”. It generates crystal-clear high definition images of a person’s teeth, soft tissues, nerve pathways and bone, safely and within seconds. You simply stand in front of the scanner and smile, and it does the rest. CBCT provides Dr. Caramico with detailed images that evaluate diseases of the jaw, dentition, bony structures of the face, nasal cavity and sinuses.
Is the Amount of Radiation Exposure from CBCT Dangerous?
Absolutely not. The amount of radiation exposure from a typical cone beam image is the equivalent of a human living on planet Earth for eight days. Dr. Caramico knows how scary the term “radiation” can be to patients; that is why he has equipped his office with the most advanced low-dose digital imaging in the dental field.
How Does Cone Beam CT Work?
Using a rotating imaging device that moves around the patient’s head, the scanner records between 150 and 600 different imaging views in under a minute. Then, a powerful computer processes the information and creates a virtual model of the area. When it’s done, the model appears as a three-dimensional image on the computer screen, which can be rotated in any direction, giving Dr. Caramico a view from virtually every angle.
