How You Can Help Your Child Brush Their Teeth

Helping a child brush their teeth can feel like a small daily task, but it plays a big role in their health. Good brushing habits can protect teeth from cavities, keep gums healthy, and help children feel more comfortable at the dentist. At Midland Park Family Dentistry, we know that parents want simple ways to make brushing easier and more effective at home.

One of the best ways we can help is by making brushing part of the daily routine. Children do better when they know what to expect. Brushing at the same time each morning and night helps build a habit. We can also make it more fun by using a short song, a timer, or a favorite toothbrush with a bright color or character. When brushing feels less like a chore, children are more likely to cooperate.

It also helps when we show children how to brush the right way. Young kids often do not have the hand skills to clean every tooth well on their own. We can guide their hand, show them gentle circles, and remind them to brush the front, back, and chewing surfaces of each tooth. A soft-bristled toothbrush and a small amount of fluoride toothpaste are usually best for children. For younger children, you should use only a tiny smear of toothpaste. For older children, a pea-sized amount is enough.

Supervision is important, too. Even if a child wants to brush alone, you may need to check their work and help them finish. Many children need help brushing until they are around 7 or 8 years old. You can let them start the routine, then step in to make sure every area is cleaned well. This support can help prevent missed spots and build better habits over time.

Another helpful step is to keep brushing positive. Praise can go a long way. Instead of focusing on mistakes, you can celebrate effort and progress. A simple "Great job brushing your back teeth" can encourage a child to keep trying. If a child resists brushing, staying calm and consistent often works better than turning it into a struggle.

Healthy brushing habits start at home, and our support makes a difference. When you help your child brush well each day, you are protecting their smile and setting them up for better oral health in the future. If you have questions about brushing, toothpaste, or your child's dental care, Midland Park Family Dentistry is here to help. Book an appointment.
